Kinds Of Compacting Equipment

1. Tamping Rollers

Tamping rollers are of the sheep-foot type. It may be towed by a tractor or self-propelled, consists of a hollow steel drum whose outer surface are welded a number of project steel feet (like sheep foot) which penetrates the soil as it moves. It produces a kneading action and a pressure to mix and compact the soil from the bottom to the top layer.



2. Smooth-wheeled Rollers.

Smooth-wheeled rollers are compacting equipment whose rollers are made of steel drums which may be ballasted with water or sand to increase its weight. When compacting cohesive soils, these rollers tend to form a crust over the surface, which may prevent adequate compaction in the lower portions of the lift. However, these rollers are effective in compacting granular soils such as sand, gravel and crushed stone. They are also effective in smoothing surfaces of soils that have been compacted by tamping rollers.



3. Pneumatic-tired Rollers.

These are surface rollers which apply the principle of kneading action to effect compaction below surface. They may be self-propelled or towed. They may be small or large-tired units. The small-tired units usually have two tandem axles with four to nine tires on each axle. The rear wheels are spaced to travel over the surfaces between the front wheels, which produces a complete coverage of the surface. The wheels may be mounted in a manner that will give them a wobbly effect to increase kneading action of the soil.




4. Vibratory Rollers

These are rollers that tend to demonstrate their abilities to produce excellent densification of the soils through vibration. Tamping, smooth-wheeled, pneumatic rollers have vibrating capabilities which may vary from 1,000 to 5,000 vibrations per minute. In addition to compaction of the soil, the drum and pad type rollers tend to shatter the rock particles near the surface and thus leave a relatively smooth surface.



5. Self-Propelled vibrating plates.

It is used for consolidating soils and asphalt in locations where large units are not practical. These gasoline or diesel-powered units are rated by centrifugal force, exciter revolutions per minute, depth of vibration penetration, feet per minute travel and area of coverage per hour.

6. Manually propelled vibrating plates.
7. Manually propelled compactors.
8. Vibratory compactors for deep sand.
